To win Google's featured snippet, answer a specific question in your first paragraph (40–60 words), use the question itself as your heading, structure content with lists and tables, and add FAQ schema. Google almost always picks the snippet from pages already ranking in the top 10 — so solid baseline SEO comes first.
What is a featured snippet?
A featured snippet — often called "position zero" — is the highlighted answer box Google displays above the regular search results. Google automatically pulls an excerpt from the page it judges to answer the query best, along with a link to the source.
Snippets come in several formats: paragraph (most common), step-by-step list, table, and video. The same principle now applies to AI answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews tend to cite content structured exactly this way.
Why position zero is worth chasing
The snippet sits above the first organic result, so it captures a large share of clicks and lends your site instant authority. For a small business it's a genuine chance to leapfrog bigger competitors — Google rewards the clearest answer, not the biggest website. Voice assistants also read their answers almost exclusively from featured snippets.
7 steps to win the featured snippet
1. Find question keywords
Snippets appear for question-type queries: "how", "what is", "why", "how much". Collect the questions customers ask you directly, mine Google's "People also ask" box, and check Search Console for question-form queries you already appear for.
2. Answer in the first paragraph
Right under the heading, give a complete, self-contained answer in 40–60 words. Skip the "in this article you'll learn..." intros — the first sentence should already answer the question. The rest of the article expands on it.
3. Use the question as your heading
Your H1 or H2 should match the real search query (like this article's title). Google connects question and answer far more easily when they sit together.
4. Structure with lists and tables
Use numbered lists for step-by-step answers and tables for comparisons. Google builds list-type snippets directly from <ol>/<ul> elements and sequences of H3 headings.
5. Add an FAQ section with FAQ schema
End the article with 3–5 common questions and short answers, marked up with FAQPage structured data (JSON-LD). This raises your odds of appearing in both answer boxes and AI-generated answers.
6. Optimize for voice search
Voice assistants read out a single answer — usually the featured snippet. Write in natural, conversational language, answer questions the way you'd answer a customer on the phone, and include local context ("in Vilnius", "in Lithuania").
7. Keep content fresh
Position zero is never permanent — Google re-evaluates it constantly. Review the article every few months, refresh numbers and dates, and add new questions from "People also ask".
Common mistakes
Long intros before the answer, answers scattered across several sections, headings that don't match real queries, and no FAQ schema at all. Businesses also forget that only top-10 pages get pulled into the snippet — structure alone won't help without baseline SEO.
💡 Quick win: Open Google and search for your main service as a question ("how to choose a dentist in Klaipėda"). Check the "People also ask" dropdown for every question — each one is a snippet opportunity you can write a paragraph for.
FAQ
Answer a specific question in your first paragraph in 40–60 words, use the question as a heading, structure content with lists and tables, and add FAQ schema. Your page needs to rank in the top 10 for that query first.
Yes — the box appears above all organic results and captures a large share of clicks, especially on mobile. Even without a click, your brand is visible at the very top.
If your page already ranks in the top 10, structural changes can take effect within a few weeks of re-indexing. New content first needs to earn a ranking — typically 2–6 months.
Not required, but it helps significantly: structured data lets Google and AI tools precisely understand the question–answer pairs on your page, increasing your chances of being cited in search and in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers.
