To get cited by ChatGPT, allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) to access your site, put a short direct answer at the top of every page, and back it with specific numbers and sources. ChatGPT cites content that is easy to extract, easy to verify and clearly attributed.

Why this matters for your business

More and more people are searching for services inside an AI conversation instead of a results page. A customer no longer types "plumber in Vilnius" and scans ten links — they ask ChatGPT what to choose and what to check before signing, and get one answer with three cited sources.

If your company is not among those sources, you do not exist for that customer. The difference from classic SEO is fundamental: there are no ten slots on page one. There are three or four citations.

This discipline is called GEO — Generative Engine Optimization.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO

GoalHow it's measured
SEOHigh position in Google resultsRankings, clicks, organic traffic
AEOWinning the answer box and voice searchFeatured snippets, "position zero"
GEOBeing a cited source inside an AI answerMention and citation frequency in ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews

One thing to be clear about: GEO does not replace SEO — it is built on top of it. Research shows Google ranking remains the strongest predictor of AI citation, with each lost SERP position cutting citation odds by roughly a quarter. If your page is not on page one of Google, it will rarely make it into a ChatGPT answer.

We covered the answer box in a separate article — GEO is the step after that.

Step 1. Let the AI crawlers in

This is the technical precondition. If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, you are invisible no matter how good your content is.

Check that these are allowed:

Many sites block these by accident — usually an old security template or a plugin default. Check this first.

Indexing speed is worth knowing too: Perplexity typically picks up new content within a few days, while ChatGPT search takes one to three weeks. Don't expect same-day results.

Step 2. Write so the answer can be extracted

AI systems do not cite paragraphs where the answer is buried in the fourth sentence after an introduction about how important the modern digital landscape is.

Practical rules:

  1. Direct answer at the top. 40–60 words, first paragraph, no preamble.
  2. One page, one question. An article answering five different questions gets cited for none of them.
  3. Headings as questions. An H2 reading "How much does SEO cost in Lithuania?" outperforms "Pricing".
  4. Lists and tables. Structured information is far easier for models to extract than running prose.
  5. A TL;DR summary. A short summary at the start or end gives the model a ready-made citation block.

Step 3. Add numbers and sources

This is probably the most underrated GEO tactic. The Princeton GEO study found that this kind of optimization can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

The reason is simple: a model reaches for what it can verify and restate without risk. "We improved the client's customer flow" is not citable. "Over four months the client moved from position 14 to position 3 in Google Maps results in Klaipėda" is.

Also keep the author, publication date and last-updated date visible. AI systems avoid citing content whose freshness they cannot judge.

Step 4. Don't over-invest in schema and llms.txt

There is a lot of misinformation here, so let's be direct.

Schema markup is useful but not a magic lever. A 2026 Ahrefs study tracking 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD found no meaningful lift in AI citations. That said, rich, attribute-heavy schema (FAQPage, Article, LocalBusiness, Product) still helps machines understand context — so implement it, just don't expect it to solve the problem on its own.

llms.txt — currently close to ineffective. Monitoring data shows that out of 62,100 AI crawler visits, only 84 targeted the llms.txt file — 0.1%. Among the 50 most AI-cited domains, exactly one had the file. It's cheap to add, but it is not a priority.

The priority is content and accessibility. Not files.

💡 Quick win: Check your robots.txt right now for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot. This one file decides whether any of the rest of this guide even applies to you.

Step 5. Get mentioned elsewhere

ChatGPT does not rely on your website alone. It relies on what others say about you — directories, media, forums, review platforms.

What works in the Lithuanian and wider EU market:

When the same name, address and phone number repeat across many trusted sources, the model has grounds to mention you.

FAQ

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

Allow GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site, give every page a short direct answer to one specific question, support it with numbers and sources, and keep working on Google rankings — ChatGPT search draws on a web index, so position still matters.

How long does it take to see results?

Perplexity usually picks up new content within a few days. In ChatGPT search a new page typically surfaces within one to three weeks. A stable citation rate builds over several months as rankings and third-party mentions strengthen.

Do I need separate content for AI?

No. Write one set of content for humans, but structure it so the answer is easy to extract: question in the heading, answer immediately below, facts with sources. Separate "AI content" does not work and damages the reader experience.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO is built on SEO. Google ranking remains the strongest predictor of whether a page gets cited in an AI answer — each lost position cuts those odds by roughly 24%.

How do I measure whether AI is citing me?

Regularly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the key questions in your market and record who gets cited. In parallel, track GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot hits in your server logs, plus referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in Google Analytics.
